My philosophy.
Teaching is not so much a job as a calling. As a teacher, one must fill a number of roles (see below: Researcher, Advocate, Craftsman, Professional). But perhaps the most important, encompassing role I see for the teacher is as a Guide. It's my job to guide students through content, introducing them to lessons and new skills that will help them as they go through life. Perhaps the most important thing I can do is provide an example, to open their eyes to possibilities previously unseen and get them invested in their own education and success. To achieve those goals, teaching cannot simply be a job. Teaching is a passion and many other things, but, most importantly, it is an identity.
One other thing: I think teaching should come with a healthy dose of humor.
